Headed into war in 2002, defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld, got so much attention for his discussion of what we don’t know that they named a book and documentary after it. (“The Unknown Known” is pretty good!) He might have garbled the delivery a bit, but the point is sometimes it’s smart to admit you don’t know the important stuff—as indeed proved true in that war.
